During the formative years of researchers, it is necessary to get training in different aspects of developing ideas into palpable work, competing for research funds from agencies, conducting research by following ethics and appropriate norms, and communicating the outcomes appropriately or filing patents can all seem difficult to cope with. To facilitate their easy entry into research environments and to create awareness about these varied aspects of scientific research, the Directorate of Research (Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal) and the School of Life Sciences (Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal) along with the Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance, Government of India, organized a one-day workshop for PhD scholars and young faculty members on Monday February 13, 2017 at the School of Life Sciences (SLS) campus.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. H Vinod Bhat (Vice-Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal) in the presence of Dr. Ajay Pillai (Grants Manager), Dr. Madhankumar Anandhakrishnan (Grants Adviser) and Dr. Sarah Iqbal (Public Engagement Officer) of the Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance (Government of India, New Delhi), Dr. N Udupa (Director Research-Health Sciences, Directorate of Research, MU) and Dr. K Satyamoorthy (Director, SLS). More than 70 young faculties and research scholars took part in the workshop. Addressing the audience, Dr. Bhat pointed out the importance of such workshops to young researchers, and also that of publications with good impact. He said that though India was among the top three fast-growing countries for number of scientific publications, there was a need for dramatic increase in the number of highly cited publications. Earlier, Dr. Udupa welcomed the gathering and Dr. Iqbal gave an overview of the workshop as well as the other activities of the agency. Dr. Raghu Radhakrishnan (Deputy Director, Directorate of Research) conducted the inauguration.
