International Childhood Cancer week -2017

International Childhood Cancer day is observed by the Department of Child Health Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal, Manipal Academy of Higher Education along with second year M.Sc. nursing students in the month of February every year. The theme for the year 2017 given by ICCCPO was “Together for Kids with Cancer, Do more- Care more”. Various activities were conducted from 7th February 2017 to 10th February 2017.

1. School awareness

A cancer awareness program was conducted in Christian PU College Udupi, on 7th February 2017. Mrs. Binu Margaret E, Assistant Professor, MCON, had taken a session on “health behaviors to promote healthy living in children”. She discussed on the effects tobacco, smoking on youth and emphasized the need of following healthy living habits for a better future. The session was taken for 40 students of PU College. Students actively participated in a small quiz competition conducted by second year MSc Nursing students and the winners were awarded. 

2. Workshop

A workshop was conducted on 9th February 2017 on “Together for kids with cancer, Do more – Care more”. The workshop started with introduction of the theme of International Childhood Cancer week by Ms. Josvita Sandra Fernandes, second year MSc nursing student. Dr. Suneel C Mundkur, Additional Professor, KMC, Manipal discussed the emergencies in pediatric cancer patients and he also specified the management for selected malignancies in children. Managing side effects of cancer treatment is also very important and this was dealt by Dr. Baby S Nayak, Professor, Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal. An interactive session on different case scenarios was led by Mrs. Charmaine Crystal Salins. Staff nurses from Kasturba hospital, faculty and students of Manipal College of Nursing Manipal attended this workshop. 

3. Drawing

A drawing competition was conducted on 9th February 2017 on the theme “Together for kids with cancer, Do more – Care more”, at Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal from 4-5 pm. Undergraduate and postgraduate students participated in the competition and the best two drawings were awarded.


4. Poster competition

A poster competition was held on 10th February 2017, on the theme “Together for kids with cancer, Do more – Care more”. A total of 29 posters were displayed in the ground floor of Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal. Mrs. Shalini, Nurse Educator, KH, Manipal and Mrs. Sheela Shetty, Assistant Professor, MCON Manipal evaluated the posters. First prize was shared by Mr. Jeffin Thomas Jacob, Ms. Sukriti Mandal and Mrs. Madhurikranta Mukherjee. Second prize was bagged by Mrs. Janet Alva D'Souza and Mrs. Shalini G Nayak.
