Report of World Diabetes Day 2024 Theme: Diabetes and Wellbeing - Empowering Global Health

The department of Medical Surgical Nursing, MCON, Manipal along with the 2nd year MSc Nursing students of Medical Surgical Nurisng specialty, conducted a ‘Diabetes Screening and Awareness program’ on November 11, 2024, at Udupi Mahila Grahakara Vividhoddesha Sahakari Sangha, Udupi district. The program started with the welcome address by Dr. Daisy Josphine Lobo, Associate Professor, Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, MCON, MAHE, emphasizing the theme of World Diabetes Day 2024, Diabetes and Wellbeing- Empowering Global Health.

A total of 68 people from the local area were screened for GRBS, BP, BMI and a health card with the measured values, was issued to each of them. Out of the 68 people, 19 of them were identified to have high blood sugar values, which included two diagnosed diabetes patients. Nine of them were found to have high blood pressure even after repeated measurements. With regard to BMI, nineteen of them had a high BMI, which included 8 overweight, 10 obese-class I and one obese-class II category.  Followed by the health screening diabetes awareness session was conducted in groups. The diabetes awareness session included dietary management, lifestyle modifications, the importance of exercise, compliance with treatment modalities, and foot care. Those found to have abnormal blood sugar and blood pressure were encouraged to go for a checkup in a hospital setting for further management. Overall, the program was focused on SDG 3: Good health & well-being. The program concluded at 1:30 pm. The program was coordinated by Dr. Daisy Josphine Lobo along with Ms. Catherine Nancy Deva, and Ms. Rishmitha, Lecturer, from the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, MCON, under the guidance of Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty, Professor and HOD, Medical-Surgical Nursing department, MCON.
