Report of Workshop on First Aid

As part of the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife – 2020, a hands-on workshop on first aid was conducted for physical education teachers of Udupi district, by Manipal College of Nursing Manipal, on 20th January 2020 at the simulation center, MAHE. Dr. Narayan Sabhahit, Registrar, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Mr. Madhukar, District physical education officer, Udupi district, Dr. Anice George, Dean, Manipal College of Nursing, inaugurated the workshop. Mr. Madhukar in his address said that the skill on first aid is very essential for the physical education teachers as there are sports related injuries occur in schools and thanked for organizing the workshop. Dr. Narayan Sabhahit emphasized on the importance of learning first aid and urged those who are getting the training to train other teachers and their students.

 The workshop sessions focused on the basics of first aid, and how to provide first aid in wounds, bleeding, musculoskeletal injury, burns, heatstroke, poisoning, bites, drowning, fainting, seizures and unconsciousness. All teachers had hands-on experience of dressing the wound, applying different types of bandages, splinting the injured body part, providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and transferring the victim. There was active participation by all the teachers and they expressed that the workshop will be very useful for them to meet the emergencies in school.
