Report on alumni engagement guest lecture series – 5/2021

Manipal School of Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal had organized a guest lecture on the topic “Cardiac Emergencies” by Mrs Meera Menon, on 25th June 2021 at 10 am through the MS Team platform.

Mrs Meera discussed the nurses need for focusing on the 6 ‘C’s of Nursing qualities which are Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage and Commitment. She also emphasized that adapting these qualities during nursing practice would help the clients to develop trust and confidence in a nurse who is taking care of them.

It was an informative session on Coronary Artery Disease and its management. She briefly discussed Coronary Artery Disease and its management in The USA with several instances from her experience. She explained the medical management of NSTEMI with a pneumonic - Acute Angina Means Nasty Artery Blockage and Cardiac Complications - Anticoagulants, Antiplatelet, Morphine, Nitroglycerine, ACE Inhibitors, Beta Blockers, ARBS, Cholesterol-lowering medications, Calcium Channel Blockers. She also enlightened the audience on PCI, CABG and heart failure.

During her session, the focus was more on nursing interventions, medications and their adverse reactions and how nurses could critically think and act accordingly during patient care. A total of 103 participants attended the session. It was a useful and interactive session so that participants could compare and relate to the standards existing in our country.
