Report on world TB day 2022

World TB Day is observed on March 24 each year to raise public awareness and understanding about one of the infectious diseases - Tuberculosis. As per the WHO report the incidence of TB in 2019 is 192/ 100000 population. The patients who are affected by TB will suffer physically, emotionally, socially and economically. There is a need for creating awareness among the general public and health care professionals on tuberculosis management and its prevention

In this regard, the Community Health Nursing and Department of Medical-surgical Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal, observe world TB day on 23 and 24 March 2022 based on the theme “Invest to end TB. Save lives”. Based on the theme, the following activities were carried out.

World TB Day Symposium 2022:

The symposium was jointly organized by Manipal Centre for Infectious Diseases, PSPH, MAHE, Manipal, Department of Community Health Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal, Kasturba Medical College, MAHE, Manipal, In association with District Health Society, District TB Centre, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Udupi on 23rd March 2022

The event was conducted in the hybrid mode, with both online and onsite participants were being invited. The resource persons were Dr Kiran Chawla, Professor, Department of Microbiology and Dr Ashwini Kumar, Professor and HOD, Department of Community Medicine, KMC, Manipal and The chairpersons were Dr Leslie Edward S Lewis, Professor and Head, Department of Paediatrics, Dr Manu Mohan K, Associate Professor, Department of Respiratory Medicine.

The first session was delivered by Dr Kiran Chawla on the topic “Challenges in contact tracing and diagnostics in paediatric TB” and was moderated by Dr Leslie Lewis. She highlighted the statistics of pediatric TB, diagnostic tests importance of diagnosis of paediatric TB. The second session was delivered by Dr Ashwini Kumar on the topic of “Programmatic Management of TB”. The session was moderated by Dr Manu K Mohan and highlighted the TB control programs and the importance of notification in TB Control. A total of 187 participants attended onsite and 58 participants attended online.

Roleplay and poster display

As part of Bharath Ka Amruth Mahotsav, World TB day was organized by the Department of Community Health Nursing and students of 4th year BSc Nursing in Community Health Center, Brahmavara on 24th March 2022. The programme was encompassed with the introduction of the topic and theme for TB day 2022 by Dr Ajith Kumar Shetty, Chief Medical Officer, CHC Brahmavar. Poster display and health education and an informative role play about the TB, its symptoms, diagnostic tests, treatment and preventions were organized by the students. The posters were displayed and health education was given at the entrance station at CHC Brahmavar. A 15 minutes informative role play was performed by the students in front of 36 ASHA workers and also OPD patients were available for this event.

Radio Talk

Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE arranged a radio talk on Tuberculosis to raise public awareness based on the theme ‘Invest to End TB. Save Lives.'

A Radio talk was recorded on March 22nd, 2022 at the MIC Radio station, MAHE, Manipal. Information was given by Dr Soumya Christabel, Assistant Professor (Sr Scale), and Mrs Janet Alva Assistant Professor, Dept of Medical-Surgical Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal along with Ms Poojashree and Mr Sreenidhi Jogi, 2nd yr MSc Nursing Students. Radio talk was broadcasted on March 24th, 2022 at 5 pm on FM 90.4 Hz, and a repeat broadcast on March 25th, 2022 at 12 pm.
