Report of Hemophilia Workshop

Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal headed by Dean, Dr. Anice George strongly believes in providing quality care with humane touch to the persons with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. In support of this, the College in collaboration with Hemophilia Society, Manipal organized a “Hands on workshop on Management of Patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders” on April 8, 2016 at Medical Simulation Centre, MU.

The objective of the workshop was to enhance knowledge and skill among the staff nurses from government and private Hospitals at Manipal and Mangalore. Dr. Annamma Kurien, Associate Dean, Manipal Melaka Medical College, and President of Hemophilia Society, Manipal welcomed the gathering and gave an overview about the workshop. She also emphasized the importance of nursing care for patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. The Chief Guest, Dr. Poornima Baliga, Dean, KMC, Manipal emphasized the importance of comprehensive health care approach in identification and management of hemophilia and she emphasized the need for prophylactic care. Ms. Penny McCarthy, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Ronald Sawers Hemophilia Centre, Melbourne Australia was the Guest of Honor. 

The workshop was unwrapped by the discussion on the introduction to hemophilia and other bleeding disorders by Dr. Annamma Kurien. Ms. Penny McCarthy had an interactive session on managing the patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders and also gave a snapshot on Ronald Sawers Hemophilia Centre activities.

Mrs. Sulochana Associate Professor and Mrs. Anjeline D’Souza, Assistant Professor, MCON, Manipal demonstrated Factor Replacement Therapy. Participants had hands on training on Implanted Central Venous Device (Port) in the Simulation Center. The participants expressed that such workshops should be conducted more often as they provide a platform for skill enhancement and also help in providing quality care to persons with hemophilia.
