World Heart Day Observation 2015

Theme: "Heart choice Not Hard choice" As a part of World Heart Day 2015 a Health Awareness programme was organized on 26th September 2015 by the Department of Community Health Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing at Prajwali Swasahaya Sangha, PaduSagri, Doddannagudde.

The programme commenced with a role play by students of 4th year B.Sc (N) on how to maintain healthy heart followed by a talk on causes and signs and symptoms of heart disease by Ms Anitha D`Souza of 4th year BSc (N). Mrs Janet Pramila D`Souza briefed on how to differentiate cardiac pain from pain due to heart burn. She asked everyone not to neglect the symptoms. She also explained in detail on the various diagnosis and treatment options for heart disease.

Dr Shashidhara Y N had an interactive session with participants which stressed on the importance of diet, lifestyle changes for preventing cardiac problems. He also educated them to utilize the community facilities available to take the victims to the hospital for fast and prompt care.
After the awareness programme, a risk assessment for cardiovascular problems was done for the participants. Height, weight, BMI and blood pressure were assessed for 28 participants. The risk assessment analysis showed that out of 28 participants 6 had obesity & 5 high blood pressure. Based on their assessed risk, the participants were educated on the care and precaution to be taken to prevent them from becoming worst.

The Programme was organized by the faculty and IV year BSc Nursing students of Manipal College of Nursing and was coordinated by Mrs. Reshma, Lecturer, Department of Community Health Nursing, MCON Manipal

According to Heart disease and Stroke statistics – 2015 update: A report from American Heart Association, Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death internationally with 17.3 million deaths each year. Report also expressed its concern on the predicted rise of more than 23.6 million deaths each year by 2030. World Health Day is observed globally on 29th September and this year the focus is on creating a healthy heart environment by ensuring that everyone gets the chance to make healthy heart choices everywhere where they live, work and play.

The Chief Guest of the programme was Mrs Hemalatha, Secretary of Swasahaya Sangha Padusagri. Dr. Shasidhara Y N, Head, Dept. of Community Health Nursing MCON and Mrs. Janet Pramila D'souza, Assistant Professor, Dept of Medical Surgical Nursing, MCON Manipal were the Resource Persons.
