Workshop on ‘Research Methodology’
5th to 7th February 2020
Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal, organized a three days workshop on ‘Research Methodology’ from 5th to 7th February 2020 at CCEID, 5th floor, Health Sciences Library building, MAHE, Manipal. This workshop was organized by I Year MSc (Nursing) students in coordination with the Department of Mental Health Nursing. A total of 43 participants had registered from various disciplines like Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacology, Architecture and Allied Health Sciences.
The program was formally inaugurated by Dr. Shyamala Hande, Director of Centre for Doctoral Studies, MAHE, Manipal, in the presence of Dr. Anice George, Dean of MCON, MAHE, Manipal, Dr. Binil, Associate Professor and Faculty Convenor of the workshop, Department of Mental Health Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Mr. Sandeep Kumar Roy, Student Convenor and Ms. Pushpa Prakash, Secretary of the workshop. Dr. Shyamala Hande in her speech emphasized the significance of integrity and proper methodology in research. Dr Anice George spoke on the importance of ethics in research. She also said that if the research process is followed with genuine interest, then it will be an enjoyable experience.
After the inauguration, 1st session was taken by Dr. Tessy Tressa Jose, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatric Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal on the topic “Research Process” in which she laid emphasis on the steps of research and how to follow them decorously.
The second session was on the topic “Research purpose and Conceptual framework” by Dr. Melita Shelini, Professor-Selection Grade, Dept. of Medical-Surgical Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal. In her session, she focused upon the difference between theoretical and conceptual frameworks and how to build up a conceptual framework by giving an example of SPURS model.
Dr. Ramesh C, Lecturer, Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal, gave instructions on “Writing Research Proposal” while Dr. Baby S. Nayak, Professor and HOD of Child Health Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal, expounded about the “Literature Search”.
The last session of the day was taken by Mr. Anil Raj on; “CTRI Registration Process”, in which he explicated on the essentiality of CTRI registration and helped participants to understand the online procedure of registration.
The second day of workshop (06-02-2020) started with the session by Dr. Veena Kamath, Professor, Department of Community Medicine, KMC, MAHE, Manipal. She edified participants about “Quantitative Research Designs” by giving actual examples from various fields.
Dr. Mamatha S. Pai, Professor, Dept. of Child Health Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal, took a session on “Qualitative Research Designs” by stressing on the fact that how vigilant a researcher should be while choosing the design and performing a qualitative research study.
The 3rd session of the day was on “Mixed Method Research Design”, in which Dr. Baby S. Nayak, Professor and HOD of Child Health Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal oriented delegates about the Mixed Methods and their types by providing heuristic examples.
Dr. Ravishankar N, Asst. Professor, Department of Data Science, Prasanna School of Public Health, MAHE, Manipal gave an intelligible idea on “Sample Size Estimation” through numerous examples.
The 2nd day of the workshop concluded after the last session by Dr. Sonia R B D’souza, Professor and Head, Dept. of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal on the topic, “Data Collection Techniques and Methods” which was explicated by her through a variety of examples and small activity.
The final day of the workshop (07-02-2020) started with the session by Dr. Latha T, Asst. Professor-Senior scale, Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, MCON, MAHE, Manipal on, “Data Collection instruments - Validity and Reliability”. In her session, she emphasized the process of validity and reliability, threats for validity and methods for testing reliability.
The second session of the day was taken by Dr. Judith A. Noronha, Associate Dean, MCON, MAHE, Manipal on, “Analysis and Interpretation of Data”. She discussed regarding data summarization, basics of statistical inference and overview of statistical tests.
Dr. Rajeshkrishna Bhandary, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, KMC, Manipal, took a session on “Ethics in Research”, in which he elucidated on ethical considerations and how pivotal it is. The 4th session of the day was on “Communicating Research Findings” by Dr. Abraham Samuel Babu, Associate Professor, Department of Physiotherapy, MCHP, MAHE, Manipal. He described the process of communicating research findings through different ways and about the obligations for doing so.
The last session of the workshop was taken by Dr. Ravishankar N, Professor, Department of Data Science, Prasanna School of Public Health, MAHE, Manipal. It was a hands-on session on “Use of Statistical Software”, using the software EZR after which, the interactive workshop was concluded by a formal valedictory program in the presence of Dr. Anice George, Dean, MCON, MAHE, Manipal and Dr. Judith Noronha, Associate Dean, MCON, MAHE, Manipal. Vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Pushpa Prakash, secretary of the workshop.
