OBSERVATION OF WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH – 2025

Department of Psychiatric Nursing at Manipal College of Nursing (MCON) in collaboration with Autism Society of Udupi, and Dr A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, Udupi, had observed World Autism Awareness Month – 2025 through two awareness programs. The programs were based on the 2025 theme "Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)", showcasing how inclusive practices can drive positive change for individuals with autism and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, particularly “SDG3: Good Health and Wellbeing”. Dr. Virupaksha Devaramane, Psychiatrist at Dr. A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, was the resource person for the programs. The first program on 17.04.2025 was organized for around 105 nursing students of MCON. Ms. Alaka Neelavara, a proud parent of a special child, shared her experience and expectations from healthcare providers with the nursing students. The second program was organized for the ASHA workers, community health officers of Thonse primary health center on 21.04.2025. This was attended by 50 community healthcare workers. Mrs. Hema, a proud parent of two children with autism, shared her experience with the audience and requested each one to build an inclusive society for every disabled child. Dr. Binil V, Professor and HoD, Psychiatric Nursing, and Mrs. Flavia S Noronha, Asst Professor, MCON, coordinated both the programs.
