Report of the Awareness program on plastic ban

As part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the students of Manipal College of Nursing Manipal organized a slum visit on 2nd October, 2019 from 10.30 am to 12 noon at Beedinagudde slum, Udupi to create awareness among slum dwellers about plastic ban.

Students educated people about the hazards of plastic use. Ms. Riya Fernandes, 3rd year BSc Nursing student spoke about the banned plastic and informed on the types of plastics that should not be used and encouraged them to use eco-friendly carry bags. Ms. Rangchung and Ms. Pritha Roy demonstrated the preparation of eco-friendly bags from paper and clothes.

Group of students danced for a song ‘Say No to plastic’ to draw attention from the children living in the slum. To encourage on use of paper bags, grocery items like sugar and rice packed in paper bags along with soap, tooth paste, surf and clothes were distributed to 40 families. Around 200 slum dwellers participated in this program.

Students were guided and accompanied by three faculty members from Manipal College of Nursing. Ms. Rangchung, Chairperson of health and social welfare committee, Student Nurses’ Association, Manipal College of Nursing, coordinated the program.
