November 17, 2025

As part of the Effective Alumni Engagement initiative, the Department of Fundamentals of Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal, organized an insightful guest lecture for the First Year MSc Nursing students on October 21st, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The session, titled “A Day in the Accident and Emergency Department: Nurses’ Roles and Responsibilities – UK vs Indian Perspective”, was led by Ms. Joyce Machado, a Registered Nurse at Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK.

Ms. Machado shared valuable insights into the functioning of emergency departments, emphasizing the Manchester Triage System (MTS) used in the UK. She highlighted the importance of assessing patient symptoms over diagnosis, and explained how the 53 MTS charts guide treatment prioritization. Her comparison of trauma triage systems in India and the NHS Trust UK was particularly enlightening, showcasing the use of color-coded flowcharts to prioritize patients based on condition severity.

The session was highly engaging and well-received by the students. It significantly enriched their understanding of global best practices in emergency nursing care and encouraged them to adopt evidence-based approaches in clinical settings. This initiative aligns strongly with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, promoting excellence in nursing education through international exposure.
