Dr Fatima D’Silva, Principal, College of Nursing, NUINS, Mangaluru and Dr. Sreejith Govindan, Deputy Registrar – Evaluation, Health Sciences, MAHE, Manipal, and Associate Professor of Microbiology, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, MAHE, Manipal, were the facilitators for the curriculum conclave.

The conclave included two group discussions. Initially, the faculty members from respective departments gathered to discuss relevance of content, teaching-learning methods, Assessment strategies, time allocation, student challenges and concerns across all semesters. Following this, eight groups were formed to discuss and revisit the implementation process of the curriculum from Semesters 1 to 8. The group discussions were guided and supervised by the facilitators. In the role of employer and industry partnership, Dr. Suba Sooria, Head of Nursing Services, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, made a significant contribution during the discussion. Later on, the coordinators of each semester presented the compiled report of the discussions.

Dr. Fatima, in her address, said that the Nursing Curriculum is robust, as it combines theory, skills, and modules that help develop both the nursing profession and its professionals to face new challenges in a diverse world. She also added that the present semester-based BSc Nursing curriculum is partially aligned with the guidelines of NEP 2020. Dr. Fatima emphasized that a good curriculum is not defined by topics or syllabus, but it demands effective implementation through faculty training, standardization of assessment tools, rubric-based, and competency-based assessment.

Dr Sreejith suggested including the medical fraternity in teaching basic science and clinical specialty subjects to adopt an interdisciplinary approach in students' learning and curriculum implementation. He also emphasized the incorporation of innovative and creative methods of assignments, such as video making and writing a reflective note on previous learnings. Students should be provided with leadership training and exposure to leadership roles by giving them the opportunity to moderate sessions and organize in service education programs. Overall, the conclave provided a valuable platform to redesign the curriculum to meet current professional and societal needs.
